New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from two seats, one from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi and another one from Kerala’s hilly constituency Wayanad, is turning out to be a blessing in disguise for him as BJP’s Smriti Irani leads for more than 30000 seats in Amethi. Smriti had given a tough challenge since the beginning of the poll campaign and took the lead from the beginning of the counting.
Meanwhile, Rahul leads for more than one lakh votes in the Wayanad parliament constituency. The current trend shows that Rahul Gandhi will come out with a record majority from Wayanad.
As the counting of the 17th Lok Sabha election passes the first two hours, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) running way ahead as they lead in 329 seats. UPA leads in 100 seats while others lead in 93 seats.
NDA’s overall lead stays close to the exit poll predictions as the exit polls had predicted more than 300 seats for the ruling alliance. Now it remains to be seen whether the BJP will retain the power with a single largest majority. It will be the first time after three decades where a party retains power with a single largest majority.
BJP rules the show in the majority of the seats while the Congress makes gains only in a few states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Congress-led UDF leads in 19 seats out of the 20 seats in Kerala while the DMK-Congress alliance lead in Tamil Nadu.
The results in Sonia Gandhi’s Raebarely shows ups and downs for the UPA chairperson as she is struggling to make a major hold on the lead.
