New Delhi; Food producers and suppliers have urged the government to restore supply chains following disruption in transportation and labour shortage since the complete lockdown against coronavirus.

Varun Berry, MD, Britania Industries asked to have government intervention to restore supply chains immediately. In his words, the supply chain is disaggregated and dependent on inter-state movement of goods. Due to the nature of the materials, inventories across the chain are low.

labourers and transporters are not ready to come out of their houses and the supply chain of essential goods is disrupted. He also doubts if a single  link of the supply chain break, the country could run out of stocks of packaged food in the next 7-10 days.

Food is a declared essential commodity and the food processing industry has been exempted from the work and movement restrictions. The supply chain includes suppliers of raw materials and packaging materials, food manufacturing factories, factory workers, transporters carrying materials and finished goods, depots, wholesalers, distributors and their salesmen.

Necessary permits need to be immediately issued to all of them. Grain markets in Rajasthan's Kota, Bundi and Baran were closed and trucks were unavailable to send grains.

Grain buyer and supplier companies headquartered at Gurugram have halted its operation due to the lockdown.
