New Delhi: The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has issued a strong warning about an AI-generated deepfake video circulating on social media. The misleading video, allegedly promoted by Pakistani propaganda accounts, aims to spread misinformation. Authorities urge users to verify facts and avoid sharing unverified content online.
The altered video purports to show Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit making extremely divisive and untrue political statements regarding the loss of Indian Air Force (IAF) Rafale aircraft.
By placing words in the Air Marshal’s mouth and making him appear to confess, the edited video aims to sow seeds of mistrust and divisiveness: “Yes, we lost our Rafale jets in May and that’s exactly where our strength lies, in learning fast… the more jets we lose, the wiser we become.”
The purpose of this falsified remark is to erode confidence in the Indian Armed Forces. It is an outright lie.
According to PIB’s research, Air Marshal Dixit’s original remarks were digitally altered to create the viral video.
The senior officer made no mention of losing any jets in the actual video. Rather, he emphasised the strategic and technological insights gained from “Operation Sindoor,” emphasising developments in cyber resistance and electronic warfare.
The verified statements made by the air marshal were centred on information warfare and operational success: We have also learnt the importance of cyber resilience and electronic warfare during Operation Sindoor. We could destroy the enemy’s drones, interrupt hostile communications, and blind their monitoring radar. all because of creative solutions from Indian academia and industry.
He went on to stress the significance of the “cognitive domain”, saying that “winning the cognitive fight in media, in public perception and morale is just as important as guns and rockets.”
In light of the fast-developing AI disinformation technology, the incident highlights the critical necessity for digital monitoring.
“Several Pakistani propaganda handles are circulating a ‘doctored video’ falsely showing Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit making political remarks about losing Rafale jets,” the PIB Fact Check said on X.
“Don’t fall for AI-generated lies designed to sow distrust and division. Stay alert. Don’t forward such fake content. For verified updates, always rely on official sources,” it added.
