Mumbai: In a transformative stride towards energy self-sufficiency and sustainable development, India is redefining its mineral exploration landscape. The Union Government is actively scouting to engage private sector participation in coal exploration, focusing on mineral-rich states such as Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
The government’s initiative is expected to invigorate the thermal power sector and ensure a steady supply of lignite, which is a key component in power generation.
In a pivotal move, the Ministry of Coal has identified around 20 lignite blocks for exploration with a focus on enhancing India’s homegrown production capabilities. By inviting private entities to participate in this venture, the government anticipates a surge in technology innovation and investments, accelerating the exploration process and reducing the dependency on imports.
This is in alignment with India’s broader vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. As India transitions towards cleaner energy sources, the exploration and utilisation of key minerals such as lithium becomes important. Minerals such as these are vital for the development of renewable energy technologies and for promoting electric vehicle manufacturing and battery storage systems.
The government’s proactive approach is exemplified by the recent auction of around 20 blocks of critical minerals, valued at about Rs. 45,000 crores for deeper exploration. Notably, two of these blocks contain lithium deposits, underscoring the strategic importance of this cosmic mineral in India’s energy roadmap.
Importantly, Coal India Limited, the country’s leading coal mining behemoth, is also entering the realm of critical mineral exploration. It is planning to acquire exploration blocks and establish a presence in countries such as Australia, Chile, Argentina, etc. leverage its mining expertise for securing a stable supply of essential minerals.
The concerted effort by the Indian government and the country’s leading public sector entity is a paradigm shift in India’s approach to mineral exploration and energy security. By fostering private sector collaboration and using technological advancements, India is charting its journey to build a resilient and sustainable energy future.
