Hundreds of irate vendors, a vital part of the local community, gathered at Azad Maidan on Thursday to protest the civic eviction effort as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) steps up its assault on unauthorised hawkers. The hawkers, whose livelihoods were drastically affected, demanded that the Street Vendors Act of 2014 be put into effect immediately and that a town vending committee be formed.
