Include Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in RG Kar Case Probe: Retired Supreme Court

Kolkata: Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly, a retired Supreme Court judge, emphasised on Saturday the urgent need to include West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in investigations into the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The recent rape and murder of a junior doctor has sparked a demand for swift and thorough investigation.

Speaking at a protest programme at Shyambazar five-point crossing, which is quite close to R.G. Kar, on behalf of an organisation ‘Amra Akranta’ (We are under attack), Justice Ganguly stated that several pieces of evidence in the junior doctor’s rape and murder case have been ”tampered with or destroyed”.

”There had been attempts to offer money to the family members of the victim so that they did not open their mouths. This is a criminal offence. So in order to steer the investigation in the right direction, there is a need for interrogation of the Chief Minister, who is also the state police minister, and the state health ministry,” he said.

Meanwhile, the city witnessed a united front of protest marches by various organisations on Saturday. Durga Vahini, the city’s women’s section of Vishva Hindu Parishad, was among the many groups that organised visible marches, demonstrating a collective call for justice.

The West Bengal, Junior Doctors Forum, has announced a unique protest programme across the state on Sunday, a day before the Supreme Court hearing in which the CBI is expected to deliver its progress report on the rape and murder case.

Junior doctors, in a display of unwavering determination, will conduct ‘mobile clinics’ in several parts of the state in memory of the victim. These clinics, along with ‘open public courts’, will provide a platform for common citizens to express their views on the ongoing protest movements, inspiring a sense of resilience in the face of adversity.
