Mumbai Eye Specialist Introduces Innovative Myopia Control For Children in India

Mumbai: In a ground-breaking solution, a Mumbai Eye Specialist introduced Myopia Control for children. It is set to revolutionize its (myopia) control, bringing a new level of excitement to the field.

Led by Dr Chandrashekhar Chawan, a leading orthokeratology specialist, Ocularist, and expert in speciality lenses at Surya Eye Centre in Mumbai, the treatment has, due to its innovative approach, instilled confidence in the effectiveness of this new initiative.

How the new treatment helps kids with myopia

The introduction of reverse geometry contact lenses to control myopia progression in children is already making waves in paediatrics eye care.

These specially designed contact lenses, worn at night while the child sleeps, promise to halt myopia progression by up to 84%, offering hope to millions of children at risk of deteriorating vision.

“Myopia is a growing concern, especially among children, and it can lead to serious eye complications later in life,” said Dr Chandrashekhar Chawan. “These reverse geometry lenses offer a non-invasive solution to slow down myopia progression, allowing children to lead an active, glasses-free day. The lenses reshape the cornea overnight, correcting refractive errors and providing clearer vision in the morning. This is a breakthrough in myopia control,” he added.

Dr Chawan also emphasised the importance of a comprehensive approach to managing myopia. While reverse geometry lenses play a critical role, he highlighted that combining pharmacological drops, lifestyle changes, and optical treatments can offer a 100% solution to control myopia progression. This comprehensive strategy ensures that every aspect of myopia management is addressed, reassuring patients and their families.

“Although eye drops are now available to slow myopia progression, they often need to be paired with other treatments for optimal results. We must consider every available tool, including lifestyle modifications, to effectively combat this growing public health issue,” Dr Chawan added.

National Myopia Week: Eye Camps in Mumbai

To further raise awareness and educate the public on early intervention for myopia, Surya Eye Centre is hosting a free Myopia Screening Camp from November 14 to 20, 2024, across its Bandra and Mulund facilities. This initiative, coinciding with National Myopia Week, aims to address the increasing prevalence of myopia in India, especially in children.

Recent studies have shown that myopia prevalence is on the rise, with around 15-17% of the Maharashtra population affected. This increasing incidence of myopia calls for urgent action. Dr Chawan’s screening camp aims to offer free consultations and early detection for children and adults alike, empowering them to manage the condition before it progresses further.

At the forefront of Surya Eye’s myopia management tools is the Oculus Myopia Master, a state-of-the-art, contactless instrument that measures crucial eye parameters such as axial length, keratometry, and refraction. Developed in collaboration with Oculus GmbH (Germany) and BHVI (Australia), the Myopia Master uses advanced AI-driven technology to provide accurate, personalised treatment plans for children suffering from myopia.

“Accurate diagnosis and personalised care are crucial in managing myopia effectively. The Oculus Myopia Master enables us to provide tailored solutions for each patient, ensuring their treatment plan is as effective as possible,” Dr Chawan noted.

With cutting-edge technology, expert care, and proactive community engagement, Dr Chawan and Surya Eye Centre are leading the charge in combatting myopia in India, offering a brighter future for children’s eye health.
