Pune: The suspected gangland death of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ex-corporator Vanraj S. Andekar late on Sunday appears to be the result of a terrible family feud, reportedly organised and carried out by his sisters and relatives, police investigations revealed on Monday.
Andekar, 32, was attacked in a filmy style when about 14-15 people on six motorcycles struck him with a chopper and fired five shots at him when he was speaking with his cousin outside his home in Nanapeth’s Inamdar Chowk area of the city.
Ranjan Kumar Sharma, the Joint Police Commissioner in charge of the inquiry, told reporters that the homicide appeared to be the result of old family feuds and some property disputes.
“We have arrested his two sisters and two brothers-in-law so far. We are on the lookout for the other accused absconding, and the police and Crime Branch teams have fanned out into different areas,” he said.
An officer identified the arrested siblings as Sanjivani Jayant Komkar and Kalyani Ganesh Komkar. They’ve been fighting over family assets for years.
Andekar’s sisters and husbands allegedly conspired to kill him with the help of mobster Somnath Gaikad, who supplied the murder weapons, a gun and a helicopter.
Last night, at around 9.30 p.m., Andekar was shot with at least five gunshots and a chopper (knife) attack and rushed to the KEM Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on admission.
Acting quickly, multiple police teams fanned out over the city and surrounding areas this morning to capture at least three suspects, who were detained for interrogation, and sensational developments surfaced as a result of their questioning. According to Sharma, Andekar died as a result of stab injuries rather than gunfire, but specifics would be revealed after the post-mortem report is ready.
CCTV footage from the horrific crime scene shows the perpetrators arriving on motorcycles, with one in a yellow T-shirt openly brandishing a sparkling knife and his friends pursuing Andekar, who had escaped inside his home. After the surgical attack, which lasted under a minute according to CCTV footage, the assailants sped away in opposite directions while Pune reeled from the horror of another ruthless murder in public view.
Though Andekar maintained a clean image, several other family members have police records for various offences in the city, and some relatives have also engaged in civic politics as municipal corporations.
