New Delhi: Zohran Mamdani, Democrat candidate on Wednesday, has secured a historic victory in New York City’s mayoral race, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo in one of the most closely followed elections of the year. With this win, Mamdani becomes the city’s first Muslim mayor and one of the most prominent progressive figures to lead America’s largest metropolis. In his first post on X after his victory, Mamdani shared a video of a New York subway train arriving at City Hall, with the text “Zohran For New York City” displayed on the wall. City Hall is where the mayor’s office is located.
This victory marks the second time Mamdani has defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo, having won the Democratic primary in June. Cuomo, who attempted a political comeback, was unable to recover from this loss. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, despite pressure from Cuomo’s camp, refused to withdraw and continued his campaign until Election Day.
The election garnered national attention, including from US President Donald Trump. On the eve of the voting, Trump took to Truth Social to criticise Mamdani as a “Communist candidate,” warning that federal funding for New York City could be reduced if he were elected. “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum required,” Trump wrote.
Zohran Kwame Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist, ran under the Democratic Party banner after winning its nomination against Andrew Cuomo and then-incumbent Mayor Eric Adams earlier this year.
