Guwahati: As Assam continues to mourn the untimely passing of cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the state’s artistic community faced another tragic loss on Monday with the death of esteemed flutist Dipak Sarma.
The renowned musician passed away at a hospital in Chennai around 6:15 a.m. after battling health complications for several months. Sarma, celebrated for his soul-stirring melodies, had initially been admitted to a hospital in Guwahati but was later airlifted to Chennai for advanced treatment as his condition worsened. Despite the medical efforts, he could not recover.
Born in Panigaon village in the Nalbari district, Sarma rose from a small-town artist to one of Assam’s most beloved flutists, a journey marked by perseverance and extraordinary musical talent. His mastery of the flute brought him accolades from both the region and beyond. Known for blending classical techniques with Assamese folk nuances, his compositions often became the defining feature of numerous Assamese musical productions.
Tragically, in his final days, Sarma faced significant financial difficulties while undergoing treatment. In October, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma provided financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to help cover his medical expenses.
Tributes have poured in from artists, admirers, and cultural institutions across Assam. Many have described him as a humble and dedicated musician who embodied the spirit of Assamese folk music.
The passing of Dipak Sarma, coming so soon after Zubeen Garg’s death, has intensified the sense of loss within Assam’s cultural landscape. Though the two artists had distinct styles, both shared a passion for enriching the state’s musical heritage, leaving a legacy that continues to resonate across generations.
