Modi’s Global South Odyssey: Strengthening India’s Footprint in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s five-nation tour from July 2 to 9, 2025, has emerged as one of the most ambitious diplomatic initiatives of his tenure, signalling a robust strategic outreach to the Global South. With visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, the trip not only revived long-dormant bilateral ties but also laid the groundwork for deeper trade, energy, and cultural cooperation.

In Ghana, Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country in over three decades, emphasising democratic solidarity and economic partnership. His engagements focused on enhancing cooperation in agriculture, health care, defence, and energy, while also reaffirming India’s long-standing support for African development. In Trinidad and Tobago, where nearly half the population traces its roots to India, Modi received the country’s highest civilian honour and addressed its Parliament. The visit was marked by efforts to boost ties in digital infrastructure, renewable energy, education, and cultural exchange, while also reaffirming the deep emotional bond with the Indian diaspora.

Argentina marked the first bilateral prime ministerial visit in 57 years. The focus here was on strategic minerals, especially lithium, alongside cooperation in renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. For India, this visit was vital for securing critical resources and building new economic bridges in Latin America. In Brazil, Modi attended the BRICS Summit in Brasília and advocated for a multipolar global order rooted in equity and reform. His pitch for South-South cooperation resonated strongly as India seeks to play a central role in shaping the future of global governance.

In Namibia, Modi addressed the national Parliament and held talks to deepen collaboration in pharmaceuticals, digital payments, environmental conservation, and mining. Namibia has emerged as a strategic African partner, especially after the success of India’s cheetah reintroduction program involving Namibian wildlife.

This landmark tour is expected to result in a series of bilateral agreements and MoUs across sectors such as energy, defence, space, digital technologies, and agriculture. It also reaffirmed India’s growing influence among developing nations and its commitment to a just international order. By forging new friendships and rekindling old ones, Modi’s journey through the Global South stands as a bold statement of India’s global aspirations, one driven by mutual respect, shared development, and inclusive growth.
