Mumbai: Deven Bharti (56) is appointed Mumbai’s police commissioner by the Maharashtra government. He officially took over the role on Wednesday from Vivek Phansalkar, a 1989-batch IPS officer, who had served as the Mumbai police chief since 2022.
An alumnus of the Delhi School of Economics, Deven Bharti is a 1994-batch IPS officer who has served as the Mumbai Police special commissioner since 2023. Additionally, he headed the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad and was an additional commissioner of Police (Crime Branch).
Notably, he had led the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack probe and is one of Mumbai’s longest-serving joint Commissioners of Police (Law and Order).
