Kolkata: Normal life returned to the emergency departments of numerous medical colleges and hospitals, including R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, when protesting junior doctors reported to work on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, the junior doctors, who had been steadfastly protesting for more than a month over the tragic incident at R.G. Kar, returned to their duties, honouring their commitment to serve the public.

However, as they declared on Friday evening while suspending their demonstration on the matter, junior doctors resumed work only in emergency departments of medical colleges and temporary medical camps set up in several flood-affected areas of West Bengal.

Confirming the return of service, Arif Ahmed, a representative of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF), the umbrella organisation of junior doctors spearheading the protest, stated that with the junior doctors back at work, emergency services and trauma care units in state-run medical colleges and hospitals were fully operational as of Saturday.

Another WBJDF spokesman stated that the junior doctors decided to call off their strike after receiving firm assurances from the state government that their demands would be met, instilling hope for a better future.

“Now it is up to the state government on how promptly it can implement its assurances and enforce tight security measures at the medical colleges and hospital to prevent the recurrence of such a dreadful tragedy in future.

“We will also keep a watch on whether the state government is really serious about fulfilling their promises about meeting our demands. If they cannot fulfil their promises within a specific period of time, the cease-work might be resumed again,” he said.

On September 27, a significant hearing in the rape and murder case will be held at the Supreme Court’s three-judge Bench, providing a crucial update on the ongoing legal proceedings.

Indira Jaising, a renowned lawyer, represents the junior doctors at the Supreme Court.

Karuna Nundy represents the senior doctors, whereas Vrinda Grover represents the victim’s parents.
