Rae Bareli to get two central varsities

The cabinet Thursday approved two central universities in Rae Bareli, the parliamentary constituency of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
The cabinet has approved setting up of the Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University and the Indira Gandhi National University for Women in Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari told reporters.
Bills related to the two institutions will come up in the coming monsoon session of parliament, he said.
The Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University will be established as a central university and as an autonomous body under the administrative control of ministry of civil aviation.
The aviation university aims to facilitate and promote aviation studies, teaching, training and research with focus on emerging areas of studies.
These include aviation management, aviation regulation and policy, aviation history, aviation science and engineering, aviation law, aviation safety and security, aviation medicine, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous goods, environmental studies and related fields.
The Indira Gandhi National University for Women will be the first university of the country to be set up exclusively for women. It will cost Rs.500 crore during the 12th Plan period.
"This would set the pace for all round growth and development of women and supplement the efforts of the government for women's empowerment by giving them an increased access to employment oriented basic courses and high end research," said Tewari.
