Saira Banu Remembers Sulakshana Pandit and Zarine Khan

Mumbai: Veteran actress Saira Banu has penned a heartfelt note for two women of “love and grace”, actress Sulakshana Pandit and Zarine Khan, the wife of actor-producer Sanjay Khan, who passed away this week.

Sulakshana Pandit passed away aged 71, and Zarine Khan died after age-related problems at age 81.

Saira took to Instagram, where she penned a note for Zarine.

Pandit, with whom she acted in the 1976 film “Hera Pheri” starring Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna.

Saira wrote: “…Sulakshana Pandit, so devoted to her family, so full of love. She sang like a nightingale; her voice touched hearts with its purity. A wonderful young lady, she would often visit our home after our marriage, accompanied by her talented brothers Jatin and Lalit and revered father Pandit Ji.”

Saira further said that she remembers “her fondly, her laughter, her humility, her sparkle. Later, destiny brought us together again when we worked on Prakash Mehra’s “Hera Pheri” memories that will forever stay close to my heart.”

“Today, as I remember both Zarine and Sulakshana, my heart feels heavy, yet full of love. They were women of immense grace and warmth, and I shall always cherish the moments we shared. May their gentle souls rest in peace and their light continue to shine eternally in the heavens above.”

Sulakshana reportedly passed away in a Mumbai hospital after a protracted illness. At the time the news was filed, neither her family nor her team had issued an official statement.

For those who don’t know, Sulakshana Pandit was a Bollywood celebrity in the 1970s. The actress was well-known for her outstanding singing in addition to her portrayals in movies.

She was the sister of the renowned musical pair Jatin-Lalit and former actress Vijeta Pandit. Additionally, she was the niece of Pandit Jasraj, a renowned classical vocalist.

Born in Raigarh, which is today in Chhattisgarh, on July 12, 1954, Pandit started singing at the young age of nine. She rose to fame as a singer with her hit song ‘Saat Samandar Paar Se’ with Lata Mangeshkar from the 1967 movie Taqdeer.

Among the popular films she has acted in are Hera Pheri, Waqt Ki Deewar, Apnapan, and Khandaan. In her time in Bollywood, Pandit worked with superstars including Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor and Shatrughan Sinha.

Khamoshi: The Musical, released in 1996, was her last playback track; it was composed by her brothers Jatin and Lalit.
