India Delivers 20 Tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance to Jamaica for Hurricane Melissa Relief

Kingston: Reaffirming its commitment to supporting Global South nations, India has delivered 20 tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) materials to Jamaica to aid recovery efforts after the destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The consignment was flown on Thursday to the Jamaican capital of Kingston by the Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft

“India stands in solidarity and support with its philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam- the world is one family. India and Jamaica have deep-rooted and strong India-Jamaica relations. India is committed to assisting Jamaica and partners in the Global South in times of need,” the Indian High Commission in Kingston posted on X on Friday.

The handover ceremony was attended by teams from the Indian High Commission and the Jamaican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Kamina Johnson Smith, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; Mayank Joshi, the Indian High Commissioner to Jamaica; and Sheila Sealy Monteith, the Permanent Secretary and Head of the Jamaican Foreign Service.

Special Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita, and Maitri (BHISHM) medical trauma units, generators, tents, bedding and matting, food kits, solar lighting, hygiene kits, and other necessities to aid with post-hurricane rehabilitation are among the relief items.

The BHISHM modular trauma kit, which consists of 72 boxes of modular medical and surgical kits (stacked together like a cube), is the key component of the HADR operation. The BHISHM modular trauma kit cube was created in India to offer first-line emergency medical assistance at the field level. Over the following four days, Jamaican medical professionals will receive specific training on the BHISHM Cube system from a four-person team of Indian Air Force medical experts.

India continues to be a member of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and an unwavering partner in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR). India has already given Jamaica disaster relief worth about 60 million Jamaican dollars (JMD) in April. According to the Indian High Commission, this comprised 60 tonnes of supplies for disaster preparedness in Jamaica, including generators, neonatal incubators, blood pressure monitors, solar lights, necessary medications, and other goods.
