A 43-Year-Old Woman Undergoes Robotic Procedure for Breast Cancer at Navi Mumbai Hospital

Mumbai: In a significant move, Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai, successfully performed Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with Reconstruction Using TiLoop— a procedure in breast cancer prevention and reconstruction. This marks a major advancement in oncological safety and aesthetic outcomes for patients.

The surgery was led by Dr Sandip Bipte, consultant and breast surgeon at the hospital, who worked closely with a skilled multidisciplinary team of clinicians, including oncologists, radiologists and reconstructive surgeons. This collaborative effort was crucial in ensuring the success of the procedure.

The surgery was performed on a 43-year-old woman who was diagnosed with right breast cancer in 2024. Her journey was not just a medical one but an emotional one. After undergoing breast-conserving surgery on the right side six months back, she was hesitant to proceed with a prophylactic mastectomy on the left breast due to concerns about extensive reconstructive surgery and its potential physical and emotional toll. However, the fear of developing cancer in her other breast lingered. Later, however, convinced of the benefits, she underwent the procedure.

With advancements in surgical techniques, robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy combined with modern reconstruction options offers a minimally invasive, safer and aesthetically superior alternative. This approach reduces trauma, speeds up recovery, and enhances overall patient outcomes, setting a new standard in breast cancer and prophylactic surgery.

Dr Suresh H. Advani, senior consultant, Medical Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, and a recipient of the Padma Bhushan & Padma Shri Awards, said, “The procedure, which is Maharashtra’s First Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with TiLoop Reconstruction, is not just a technical achievement; it is a testament to the ever-evolving understanding of compassionate cancer care. This approach elevates the standards of treatment while prioritising patients’ dignity and emotional resilience. As we embrace such innovations, we must remember that the crucial role of oncology lies in empowering individuals with hope, restoring their sense of self, and transforming fear into courage.”

In addition, Dr Sandip Bipte, consultant–Breast Surgeon, Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai,  said, “The Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with TiLoop reconstruction exemplifies the synergy of cutting-edge technology and innovative surgical techniques, offering patients a safer, less invasive, and more effective treatment option. This advanced approach ensures precise cancer clearance, preserves the nipple-areola complex, and significantly enhances the patient’s quality of life after breast cancer treatment. By prioritising physical and emotional well-being, we aim to empower patients with renewed confidence and self-assurance.”

Furthermore, Dr Jayanti Thumsi, Lead & Robotic Surgeon – Breast Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Bangalore, said, “Breast cancer surgery is evolving, offering women better outcomes. With first-hand experience performing Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with TiLoop-assisted Breast reconstruction, I’ve seen how technology enhances precision, recovery, and aesthetics. Embracing such innovations can ensure that every woman gets the best possible care. After all, the goal is survival, which comes with confidence and dignity.”

In India, breast cancer rates are notably high, especially among young women, constituting 48% of cases.
