Continuing with the tradition, Indian High Commissioner in UK Mr Y. K. Sinha attended the Chhatri Memorial Ceremony at Brighton where he paid homage to the 53 soldiers of the Indian Army who laid down their lives during World War 1 and were later cremated at the site.

This year the ceremony also commemorated the centenary of the end of the First World War in which 1.4 million Indian soldiers and officers fought in the Allied forces at the western front in France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine, East Africa and Gallipoli.

The ceremony was also attended by the Lord Lieutenant, officers of the British Armed Forces, Metropolitan Police, prominent members of the local community and members of the Indian diaspora.

An interesting fact: The Chhatri was designed by E. C. Henriques from Mumbai and was unveiled by The Prince of Wales in 1921.
