Islamabad, Nov 19: In a bid to restore normalcy and initiate redevelopment of the region, Pakistan, Russia and China will hold consultations on Afghanistan in the month of December to explore ways to reach reconciliation and restore peace in the war-torn country, an official here said.
It may also be seen as a move to reassert their geographical supremacy at a time when India, America along with other NATO allies are taking keen interest in restoring growth into Afghanistan. The trilateral talks have assumed importance at a time when there is no let-up in the violence in Afghanistan in spite of the advent of winter.
"We attach high importance to all initiatives aimed at bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region at large," Foreign Ministry spokesman Nafees Zakaria said in a statement to the press.
"Under the said trilateral meeting, a working level meeting has already taken place. The deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan has raised concerns about the spillover effect due to the presence of NSAs (non-state actors) and other elements there," the spokesman said.
The statement further threw light on the upcoming meeting in India which will be attended by Pakistani Foreign Affairs Adviser, Sartaj Aziz. This will be the first meeting of high level diplomats in the after math of the horrendous Uri attacks.
Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah issued a statement recently that he is looking forward to visiting Pakistan since the invitation from the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been accepted.
With tensions at the India Pakistan borders not turning down the bilateral meet between diplomats is being looked forward to as a means of calling in a truce to consistent ceasefire violations triggered from the Pakistani side.
