Warsaw: Doctors from Alliance of Health Care Employers (PPOZ) says the biggest consumers of sugar in Europe is Polish kids below 10 years who eat 95 grams 19 teaspoons of sugar every day. The draft law on the so-called sugar tax drafted by the Health Ministry was adopted by the lower house of Polish Parliament last week.

The bill aims at imposing additional fees on soft drinks as a tool to fight increasing problem of being overweight and diseases caused by excessive use of sugar. "The introduction of the sugar tax, supposed to discourage Poles from drinking sweet drinks doctors from PPOZ said on Thursday.

Excessive consumption of sugar-based products was a cause of many diseases of civilization like the risk of diabetes and sugar consumption is addictive, like alcohol. Excessive sugar disturbs the endocrine system, and leads to metabolic diseases, they added

The PPOZ doctors added that a sugar tax was already in force in some European Union countries, and according to research, it has significantly reduced sales of sweetened drinks.
