New Delhi: On Monday, the Supreme Court halted the implementation of contentious orders from the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand mandating that the names of all proprietors and employees be displayed at all restaurants and dhabas along the Kanwar Yatra route.

SC will next hear the matter on July 26. The top court has issued a notice to all the states where such yatras take place

Issuing notice on petitions challenging the impugned directives, a Bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti remarked that the devotees may be served with food of their choice maintaining standard hygiene.

According to state government guidelines, every restaurant, food joint, and eatery in the states will need to have a ‘nameplate’ with the names of the owners/proprietors and employees on it, a measure aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability.

In the month of Shravan, Hindu devotees who participate in the Kanwar Yatra seek to preserve their “purity of faith” by doing this.

As per the rule, those seen selling goods along the Yatra route with a Halal certification would also be subject to legal action.
