Geneva, Nov 30: Nearly 4,700 migrants and refugees from disturbed war torn countries died after drowning in the Mediterranean trying to cross over and reach shores in Europe, the number came through a report submitted by International Organisation for Migration. The numbers make 2016 one of the deadliest year for migrants trying to reach safe shores even though the number of survivors are very low.
"This death toll is significantly higher than the number of fatalities documented over the same period last year, when 3,565 men, women and children were reported dead through November 30," the IOM said on Tuesday.
According to latest IOM figures, 348,664 migrants and refugees have arrived in Europe by sea this year compared to 883,393 arrivals recorded at this point in 2015.
By far the most dangerous sea route for migrants, the central Mediterranean passage linking North Africa with Italy has claimed the lives of 4,199 people since the beginning of the year.A further 429 individuals have perished on the eastern Mediterranean route separating Turkey and Greece, while 62 have died on western Mediterranean passages.
The migration patterns have become very disturbing since residents of famine and war struck African nations along with refugees fleeing a burning front in the middle east are all trying to cross over to Europe in a bid for a new life.
The cause of the migrants has seen many personalities endorse the stance that the world needs to come together in order to welcome migrants who will otherwise perish trying to survive and that is the worst abuse of human rights.
