The beautiful anglo-gothic marvel – the Roman goddess of flowers have their hands missing!

All is not well with the city’s prominent landmark, Flora Fountain. Two of the four pretty portland stone statues at the base that surround an imposing white statue of the Roman Goddess of flowers have their hands ‘missing’. Of great historical importance, the statue’s past is traced to the time when the Old Mumbai Fort was demolished. But ironically the ASI (Archeological Survey of India) and the BMC, the two nodal organizations that are supposed to be behind its upkeep and maintenance are looking the other way. When apprised the concerned BMC officials about this, they elicited their ignorance and showed no interest in the topic.

An ace tourist attraction located in the heart of South Mumbai and a shout away from Shivaji Terminus and the Church Gate Railway Stations respectively, it was built in 1869 in the honor of the then Governor of Mumbai, Sir Bartle Frère.  Surrounded by grand neo–Gothic and Indo-Saracenic style buildings of great heritage value, it is a great landmark of this city and has a high heritage value. ‘But the casual attitudes of our authorities have caused us the two hands of this priceless architectural wonder,’ said DrRajenderYadav, a prominent shutterbug of the city.
