The Samajwadi Party’s government in Uttar Pradesh seems to be in a damage control mode; referred the Badaun rape and murder case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday.
The tragedy that happened on May 29 has acquired wide media publicity. The mounting public pressure forced the Akhilesh Yadav government to act swiftly and the state police nabbed all the accused within 48-hours – a record of sort for a state like Uttar Pradesh.
It should be recalled here that the two minor girls were gang raped and murdered and their bodies hung from a tree in the state’s Badaun district early morning on Thursday. The girls were aged between 13 -14 years, well informed sources revealed.
Ironically, among the rapists were three constables too, who were immediately arrested and put under suspension by the government.
