As Article 370 of the constitution that gave Jammu and Kashmir unique status was struck down on Monday, actor Anupam Kher, a loud voice in the state discussion, tweeted on Monday that he had "woken up in New York to the best news".

Mr Kher,  has long been a vociferous active supporter of reform in the relationship between India and its northernmost state. He is known to have powerful opinions on the community exodus caused by violence in late 1989 and early 1990, a Kashmiri pandit himself.

Kirron Kher, Anupam Kher's wife, a lawmaker of the ruling BJP from Chandigarh, also tweeted posted in Hindi.

"The entire credit for removing Article 370 and 35A goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah," she wrote in Hindi.
