Animal lovers may heave a sigh of relief over the incarceration of a BEST driver for killing a canine. This is the first time a government employee has been held for slaying an animal.
The police have arrested a BEST bus driver for running over a street dog while it was crossing the road. Some vigilant citizens stopped the bus and hand over the driver to an NGO.
On Thursday evening around 7.30 pm, the accused, Arjun Kharat, was negotiating a BEST route number 240 bus towards Dahisar station. As soon as it approached New Link Road near McDonald’s, Kharat took a turn at great speed and crushes the black dog.
A local activist, Salim Charania, of Peace for Animals Welfare Association (PAWA), registered a complaint against Kharat at MHB Colony police station in Borivli. Onlookers in this case informed the police that the bus was being driven at great speeds.
They stated Kharat seemed to be in haste and had watched the dog prior to the mishap and could have saved it, but chose not to.
The police have registered a case against Kharat under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 428 (mischief by killing or maiming animal) of the IPC. He was released on bail.”
