President Ram Nath Kovind approved the bill to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir into two regions of the Union – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

After sailing through the Lok Sabha last week, the bill was sent to the president, with some opposition parties walking out, bringing down the majority mark, and others side by side with the government. It's been adopted in the Rajya Sabha already.

The Union Territories will come into existence on October 31, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's 144th birthday.
