BMC to impose water cut from July

El Nino has played spoilsport this time with weaker monsoon in Mumbai and elsewhere in India. As for Mumbai, the drinking water comes from monsoon that feeds the three major lakes, Tulsi, Vihar and Powai besides dams, which supply potable water to Mumbaikars.

Among the lakes, two are at their lowest drawable levels. A senior civic official said, if it does not rain in the next few days, water cut will be imposed.

The BMC will impose water cut by 10% starting from the first week of July itself.

To overcome the problem, the civic body is seriously considering over cloud seeding method. Cloud seeding is the scientific form of weather modification. Here, the amount of water vapor that falls from cloud is enhanced scientifically and the precipitation is higher than the normal rainfall.

It has already invited pre-bid tenders and if the experiment is successfully produced, the BMC plans to execute it in a month’s time.
