Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Sushil Chandra today appointed as Election Commissioner of India, the ministry informed.

Sushil Chandra, an IIT Graduate,  is a 1980 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service(Income Tax Cadre). Currently, he is serving as the Chairman of CBDT till May 2019. On May 2018, Chandra was given his second extension as the chairman of CBDT, the apex policy-making body of the Income Tax Department.

With Chandra's appointment, the Commission now has Sunil Arora as the Chief Election Commissioner and Ashok Lavasa & Mr. Sushil Chandra as the two commissioners.

The Commission is expected to announce the date and schedule of the elections by the end of this month.
