In the backdrop of worst drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls, there is an intense pressure for a change in the leadership of the city Congress unit to boost confidence among the sulking party workers in order to perform better in the forthcoming assembly elections.
A glut of legislators, corporators and party workers are demanding rejig of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) and the removal of the president Prof Janardhan Chandurkar.
Blaming Chandurkar for the worst ever performance in the Parliamentary polls, a party leader retorted, "In the previous parliamentary polls in 2009, the party had registered an impressive victory by bagging five of the six Lok Sabha seats from Mumbai. This time the reverse happened and the party even lost the constituencies represented by Milind Deora, Priya Dutt and Gurudas Kamat."
“He lacked leadership quality to lead a metropolis like Mumbai,” he added.
Meanwhile Chandurkar stood his ground, said, "I focused my attention to Mumbai’s 36 assembly constituencies and even led a demonstration against civic issues last year.”
For septuagenarian Chandurkar, age is not on his side. He is also alleged to have miserably failed on connecting with corporates which is a must for any political leader of substance in Mumbai.
