Clashes in Srinagar after Friday prayers

Srinagar, Feb 3: After a lull of a few months fresh clashes broke out in Srinagar city after locals hurled petrol bombs at the deployed security forces post the Friday prayers. Unidentified youth were seen throwing stones and petrol bombs at the CRPF troops in the city, injuring one jawan in the process.

The forces had to resort to lathi charge and tear gas to disperse the crowds, the more violent ones were seen in North Kashmir's Sopore town.

Separatists have called for post Friday prayer protests against a West Bengal court's decision to sentence to death Muzaffar Ahmad from Kulgam in south Kashmir.Authorities placed separatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq under house arrest in a bid to foil mass protests.

Security forces are stating that another reason for the fresh clashes could be the house arrest imposed on JuD leader, Hafeez Sayeed in Pakistan who is seen by many Kashmiris as their idol in fighting for Kashmir's independence.
