Congress too wants probe into allegations against ex-army chief

Congress' Jammu and Kashmir chief Saifuddin Soz Saturday sought a probe into allegations that former army chief V.K. Singh used security funds to in an attempt to topple the Omar Abdullah government in 2010.
"Those who support the probe, I am not upset with them, I support them. There should be a probe," Soz told reporters here.
Abdullah's National Conference has already demanded a probe into allegations that the technical services division (TDS) of military intelligence paid Rs.1.19 crore to a state cabinet minister to topple the NC-Congress coalition government in the state.
The NC has already said the developments those led to the summer unrest in the Valley in which 110 people were killed in violent clashes between protesters and security forces appeared to have been orchestrated as the disclosures indicated.
The probe report carried in indian Express newspaper Friday said state Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir had been paid to topple the state government. Mir has already denied the allegations asserting that he worked to defuse the volatile law and order situation in the Valley in 2010.
Asked if Mir should resign on moral grounds as he is in the state cabinet as a Congress nominee, Soz said the minister should be given a fair chance to defend himself.
"If he fails in defending himself, then we will take a decision at the party level. At this time, these are allegations and whether these will stand the scrutiny and test of time is to be seen," he added.
