He paid a heavy price for his altruistic endeavor. Sampath Salunkhe, the CR ticket checker, was beaten up by people at Jalgaon railway station in western Maharashtra for allegedly ‘pushing’ out a woman from a train in drunken state leading to her death, on May 29. He repudiated the contention saying neither he pushed the woman out nor was he in an inebriated state. He was simply trying to help her board the running train.

None believed him and he is rotting behind bars since then.

A fresh medical report released on Friday came as a saving grace for Salunkhe which showed no trace of alcohol in his blood sample.

Meanwhile, the CR has requested the Jalgaon railway police to take immediate action against everybody involved in the brutal attack on a ticket checker on May 29.

While the relatives of the woman, Ujjwala Pandya, 32, alleged that she was hindered by a drunken TTE, which led to her falling in the platform gap at Jalgaon station on May 29, the railways have said that CCTV footage shows the TTE trying to help the woman board the train when she fell.

"We have found the TTE is innocent and the CCTV footage on the incident has got over 1,300 hits on internet. Now with medical reports showing him clean, we will pursue with the police to arrest the persons who had assaulted him badly at the railway station that day," CR chief spokesperson Narendra Patil, said.

Sources said that among those who assaulted and humiliated him publicly was a local politician. Salunkhe has also filed a cross-complaint and demanded action against his attackers.

The sad incident had happened when the woman tried to board the LTT-Patna Janata Express early morning on May 29. Salunkhe stressed he had extended a hand to help the woman board a running train, but she declined to hold his hand and grabbed the door handle instead.
