Exit polls offer clear win to BJP in four out of five states

New Delhi, March 10: In what can be seen as the burgeoning impact of Prime Minister Modi's popularity, majority of the exit polls have predicted a substantial win for the BJP in the four out of five states which went to polls earlier this year.

The fight thought seems centered on who will win the largest state of India, Uttar Pradesh. Despite the engative publicity of demonetisation, Prime Minister Modi is only looking all set to prove yet again that the modi wave is here to stay, with an eye on the 2019 elections as well.

Despite the much talked allaince between Congress and Samajwadi party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh and their claims to win over 2/3rd majority in the state… the exit polls are offering a much lower expectation from the mahagatbandhan. Already fissures are showing in the allaince when minutes after the exit polls were announced, a SP MLA lashed out at the Congress and Rahul Gandhi as being responsible for the dissapointing exit poll results. According to 4 out of 6 exit polls the win would be most likely in favor of BJP which could come near striking distance of the halfway majority of the 202 seats in the largest state. The SP and Congress allaince could come in at a weak second spot which could be challenged by Mayawati who still holds sway over the muslim and minority populations of the state.

The last time BJP was in power in UP was in 2002 post which it lost hopelessly in the state able to win only 47 seats. This time around it is the Modi magic which seems to have worked yet again in the states and could call in a resurgence of the party in UP as well. The direction of the BJP campaign which focused only on development issues seems to have added a boost with the Prime Minister promising not just free laptops to all youngsters but free internet to go with it. The Central Government has also promised that if in power they will make sure that every household gets a toilet in the first few years of coming to power in the state.

Meanwhile in other states with the exception of Punjab, where SAD and BJP face anti incumbency, polls are predicting a healthy win for BJP in Uttrakhand, Goa and Manipur. 3 out of 4 exit polls in Uttrakhand pronounced a verdict in favour of BJP as did 2 polls in Goa and the Cvoter poll in Manipur.

Despite their own conclusions, the polls are suggesting that in states such as Manipur and Uttrakhand the anti incumbency sentiment could well work against the Congress and in Goa the BJP should be comfortably placed. The one state without a very clear picture is Punjab where the stakes are still even for both AAP and Congress, either party could turn the tables but better results can only be known by tommorow when the actual poll results will be announced.
