Food adulteration rampant despite tough legislation
The next time you visit any restaurant or roadside eateries beware of its tongue-tingling samosas and vadas. You may drool over its very presence but it has all the potential to land you into a hospital. The oil they use may be adulterated and burn down your intestine in acidic severity.

And why hotels alone are to be blamed for this. Even the oils you purchase for domestic use from any hip joint of a city may stir trouble in your bowel. A customer complains of branded edible oil he purchased from there, “I suffered from burning sensation. Initially, I supposed this to be acidity.” When it wasn’t relieved by ant-acid medication, he consulted doctor who advised him to have a thorough probe done

Almost every news channels under the sky had earlier depicted footages, and put them on the loop, showing production of adulterated oils from as inedible substances as surf and washing soda in discreet Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan villages.

Its wide media exposure had led to raids by the police and FDA authorities.Just imagine how harmful its consumption is and the extent of damage it may cause to our delicate visceral organs. The city nutritionists warn of its lethal portents, “Many carcinogens as adulterant ruins life and causes terminal diseases like cancers.”
The edible foods are more prone to adulteration. Milk, edible oil, ghee, wheat flour, etc. are the commodities where adulteration is mostly done and that too right under government’s nose in the nation’s finance capital!

However, FDA – a government agency that monitors food adulteration claims that they have registered 200 cases last year under the newly modified stringent act that offers no respite to the offenders. Still this has failed to stem the rot.

An FDA official on condition of anonymity said, “Even a common man can test the purity of powdered condiments, which is totally inexpensive and does not require any technical expertise.  Most of the tests are very simple, for example to test the purity of turmeric powder mix some hydrochloric acid in it. If there is any adulteration its color will turn slightly blackish.”
