Guv pats Indian postal service

P.V.Anandpadmanabhan

The Department of Posts is celebrating the National Postal Week from October 9 to 15. India has one of the largest Postal Networks in the world with more than 1,55,000 post offices of which 89 per cent are located in rural areas. Maharashtra has 12,854 post offices.

The Governor complimented the Indian postal service for touching the lives of millions of people of the country and for playing a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the nation.

The Governor of Maharashtra Vidyasagar Rao insisted the Indian post to make use of its immense goodwill and vast physical infrastructure across the country to extend the benefits of banking and insurance to the people who are outside the banking system.

This according to him would help India achieve the cause of financial inclusion.

Referring to the growing e-commerce boom in the country, Governor asked the postal department to gear itself up to make Indian Post the preferred courier of the nation.

The World Post Day is celebrated on 9th October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern.
