A meeting between senior military officials of Pakistan and India has its own symbolism and value, even with the two nations having an "unfortunate history of hostilities", a leading Pakistani daily said Wednesday.

 

 "The getting together of the directors general military operations of Pakistan and India at Wagah on Tuesday is significant, primarily because the meeting will improve understanding between men who, responsible for minding frontiers that have been the venue and source of sudden tensions gripping the two nations, are in the thick of it," Dawn said in an editorial.

 

 The Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) met after a gap of 14 years at Wagah on the Pakistani side of the border in Punjab to ensure peace on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

 

 The newspaper said the positive exchange between the two DGMOs was a "milestone in the normalisation process".

 

 The DGMOs meet coincided with a meeting of the Pakistan Rangers and India's Border Security Force.

 

 These initiatives will need to be followed up with continued close contact over time, the daily added.

 

 The LoC, which divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan, has seen several ceasefire violations in recent months. Five Indian soldiers were killed in August, leading to tension along the LoC.
