Delhi: Union IT Minister RavI Shankar Prasad sought to allay concerns of the IT sector and professionals about the future of H-1B visas, saying that the government had spoken to the "right quarters" in the US administration, media reports said.
According to one of the reports, the government had expressed its "concerns" regarding the possible impact on Indian IT companies because of the changes that the Donald Trump administration wanted to make to the work abroad visas that are widely used by IT companies in India and in the US.
"Some concerns have been raised and we are working with the Ministry of External Affairs." Prasad was quoted as saying in a Times of India report.
Prasad also said that he was in touch with pioneers of the Indian IT industry, including Infosys founder N Narayana Murthy and Nasscom president R Chandrasekhar.
The Trump administration recently introduced a legislation which sought doubling the salaries of H-1B visa holders to over $130,000 from the current $60,000. The move was in line with Trump's 'Buy American, Hire American' agenda to bring jobs back to the US. If the legislation comes into effect, IT firms face the risk of higher operational costs and a shortage of skilled workers.
