Jaitley to assess security along LOC

Annoyed over the constant breach of ceasefire agreement by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LOC)  in Jammu and Kasmir, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley is all set to visit the state on Saturday to review security along the border.

In his two-day trip – Jaitley will meet senior army officials to review the situation prevailing along the Indo-Pak border there.

Notably, ahead of Jaitley’s visit, Pak forces once again breached the ceasefire by targeting Indian Posts with heavy firing and mortar shelling along the LOC in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.  This prompted retaliation by Indian forces there.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed on the security environment on Friday by the Defence Minister. National Security Advisor and former IB chief Ajit Doval was present in the meeting that was held in the War Room of the cabinet.

There have been 20 incidents of ceasefire violation since April by Pakistan along the LoC and international border in Jammu & Kashmir. In the past year alone, there were 149 such incidents, resulting in the death of a dozens of jawans and injuries to 41 others.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also questioned the timing of the ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC) on Friday.
