A 24-year-old to-be bride was killed after she allegedly got stuck in a lift and suffered severe head and neck injuries in an SRA building in Malad (east) on Sunday night. The Kurar police is probing to find out if anybody’s negligence led to the mishap.
According to the Kurar police, the incident occurred at around 8 pm in Al Muzalfa, an SRA building near Humaira Park in Pathanwadi area of Malad (east). The deceased, identified as Aliya Arif Varaliya, was a resident of a building in Humaira Park and had gone to the nearby building with her mother to meet a friend who lived on the 10th floor. Aliya was to get married in a couple of months and was visiting the friend to place an order for mehndi (henna) for the wedding.
While some persons had got into the lift, Aliya was about to get in. Her mother was waiting behind her. Suddenly, the lift started and Aliya got stuck in between. She also suffered injuries in the middle portion of the body. The door got closed and she was pulled upwards. She used to get fits and was on medication for the same. She got fits when the incident took place and was declared dead at Shatabdi Hospital. An investigating officer said, “The building was constructed in 2010 and the number of lifts is less as compared to the number of rooms in the building. The lifts are used frequently.” During investigation, the Kurar police also learnt that the government has appointed a few lift inspectors for thousands of buildings.
The lift inspectors have juniors working under them. The police said the lifts are maintained on a contractual basis. The police is probing the incident to find out if the society members, the body looking into maintenance of lifts in the building or any other person’s negligence led to the incident. As of now only an accidental death report has been registered.
