Mumbai: C.P. Radhakrishnan, the Governor of Maharashtra, has been announced as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) Vice Presidential candidate by BJP Chief JP Nadda at a press conference today.

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi expressed his full support for Radhakrishnan’s candidacy on Twitter.

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, aged 68, hails from Tamil Nadu and took on the role of Maharashtra Governor in July 2024. Prior to this position, he served as the Governor of Jharkhand for over a year.

With more than four decades of experience, Radhakrishnan is a well-respected figure in the political and public life of Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1998 from the Coimbatore constituency and was re-elected in 1999.

At 16, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and has travelled extensively as a politician, having visited 24 countries.

During his tenure as a Member of Parliament, he served as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Textiles and was a member of the Parliamentary Committee for Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) as well as the Consultative Committee for Finance. Additionally, he participated in a special parliamentary committee that investigated the Stock Exchange Scam.

In 2004, Radhakrishnan addressed the United Nations General Assembly as part of a parliamentary delegation and was also a member of the first parliamentary delegation to Taiwan.

In 2016, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Coir Board in Kochi, a position he held for four years. Under his leadership, coir exports from India reached an all-time high of Rs. 2,532 crores. From 2020 to 2022, he served as the All India in Charge of the BJP in Kerala.

An enthusiastic sportsperson, Radhakrishnan was a college champion in table tennis and a long-distance runner. He also enjoys playing cricket and volleyball, cricket and volleyball.

The post of Vice President of India fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation last month.
