Maria warns rogue-cops of strict action

The top cop Rakesh Maria has received a list of dishonest officers attached to the police commissionerate. He has decided to meet them individually this week, and warn them of stringent action. Well placed sources in the police department said that the list contains the names of over a dozen cops.

A glut of policemen through their unscrupulous acts is tarnishing the image of the city police.  Recently, police inspector Mahendra Narlekar and assistant inspector Subhash Samant of Khar police station were nabbed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly trying to book a businessman in a phony case and extorting money from them.

The cops had fled and later surrendered before the police. Following this case, senior police inspector of Khar police station AK Sonawane was transferred to the Local Arms department of the city.

In a similar case of misdemeanor, another senior cop of Mulund police station, Phoolsingh Pawar was recently transferred, after his orderly was caught red handed by the ACB accepting bribe. Like Sonawane, Pawar too was transferred to Local Arms department for lack of supervision and negligence.

"Due to corruption and misconduct widely prevalent in the police department, senior cops such as joint, additional and deputy commissioners were asked to prepare a list of black-listed officers from their department who are involved in bribery.

The list took four long months to get prepared. The officers are named in the said list on the basis of monitoring done by senior officers and complaints received," Maria said to a city tabloid.

The officers’ ranges from sub-inspectors to senior police inspectors posted in various departments such as local police station, crime branch and traffic department. "While some officers are involved in bribery, others are allegedly involved in womanising and boozing during duty hours," a police officer said.

These officers need to improve their conduct, else stern action would be taken on them, said Maria.
