Meghalaya Congress leaders tell Sonia about dissent

Two Congress legislators from Meghalaya Tuesday met party chief Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and apprised her about the growing dissent within the party in the state.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee chief D.D. Lapang and Forest and Environment Minister Prestone Tynsong drove to Sonia Gandhi's house and also expressed displeasure at the style of functioning of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. "The discussion dwelt on the dissension, dissatisfaction with the functioning of the state government which has affected the relationship of ministers, legislators, senior party leaders and the party's frontal wings," said a statement from Lapang's office here.
According to the statement, Gandhi expressed "grave concern" over the matter and promised to look into it.
The rift within the party surfaced in the Lok Sabha elections when some party legislators and ministers openly worked against Vincent H.Pala, the official Congress candidate from Shillong parliamentary constituency.
In the 60-member legislature, the Congress is the single largest party with 29 seats – two short of majority. The Nationalist Congress Party, which has two seats, and 11 Independent legislators are extending support to the Congress.
