Metro safe for women: Study

A survey conducted by Kadence International has revealed that women travelers feel safer in traveling in Mumbai metro. The women commuters aired greater satisfaction on a range of issues, unlike men who were peeved by certain factors.

Safety came first to women commuters, who said they feel secure while commuting in the Metro between Versova and Ghatkopar. The other factors included train timetable, ambiance, comfort, overall travel experience, station areas, assistance by staff, customer service, signage and information.

"Mumbai Metro seems to be doing well with 85% commuters rating their overall experience highly (a mean score of 8.88 on a 10 point scale, exceeding the set norm of 8.4) and a whopping 95% willing to recommend the service to others," reads the survey report.

According to a MMOPL spokesperson, "Security and comfort of our commuters, especially women, who are exposed to pestering and molestation while on roads, are our main concern. We equally stress on service efficiency, so that the perennial problem of negotiating with unpredictable traffic on roads and getting delayed to reach their destinations become a matter of the past for commuters. We want to instill a sense of safety among our passengers."

In addition to having dedicated women staff to frisk women commuters, Mumbai Metro has plain-clothed women personnel deployed at stations, and seats reserved for women, apart from real-time security surveillance system.
