Miscalculation or emergency halt?
Scores ofwomen suffer injuries, many escapes falling in gap between train and platform as motorman halts 15-car local at 12-car spot — then suddenly take off again

A major tragedy has been averted when the motorman of a 15-car Kalyan-CST local erringly halted the trains, yards before the marked spot and then restarting it resulting in passengers falling on the platform. Fortunately nothing serious happened and they escaped with minor injuries as the train has slowed down to a dead speed.

Two women suffered minor injuries and many other commuters escaped falling in the gap. The local that arrived on platform No 6 at Dadar, mistakenly halted yards ahead of the marked spot. As passengers jostle for boarding and alighting, the motorman realized his fault and, without any prior warning, instantly hauled itagainto the scheduled 15-car halting spot.

This led to hugedisorder, with commuters worried to alight falling out of coaches, and others wanting to board the train hanging from the footboard as the train chugged off. The train, finally, made two halts within the period of few seconds. But by then scores of passengers had tumbled on to the platform, leaving thembaffled and agitated.

CentralRailwaysourcesrevealed that the motorman had made an emergency halt as someone jumped off the platform. But an official on condition of anonymity said that the motorman might have miscalculated by halting the 15-car train at the 12-car spot.
