Modi mingles with crowd at Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a day-long visit to his parliamentary constituency, Thursday shook hands and mingled with the crowd here.

After a delay of an hour due to dense fog in Uttar Pradesh, Modi arrived in this temple town and reached the Lanka Chowk, outside the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), here.

He paid floral tributes at the statue of Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of BHU.

Crowd nearby swelled and got restless, and instead of getting into the bullet proof vehicles that waited for him, Modi started walking towards the crowd.

The security personnel were caught by surprise and threw a security ring around the prime minister. Still, Modi walked towards the people, shook hands with them and waved at them.

He walked on for a few hundred metres on the road towards the Assi Ghat and later got into his waiting SUV and drove off to the Assi Ghat.
