Mumbai Metro gets fare fixation committee

By Apurva Bhatt

After several months of delay the fa.re-fixation committee, which will determine the Metro tariff on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, has finally been formed.

The three member committee includes, Justice E Padmanabhan (retd) the committee's chairman, the two other members are former chief secretary Jayant Kumar Banthia and former law secretary T K Vishwanathan. The MMOPL has no representative on the panel.

Currently, Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) charges fares in the range of Rs 10-40 to travel between Versova and Ghatkopar. For a smart card user, the maximum fare is a discounted Rs 32 though the minimum fare is still Rs 10.

In November 2013, MMOPL had requested the Centre to form the fare fixation panel. In February 2014, the government had stated that fares had to be fixed "afresh" by the MMOPL. The Bombay high court had upheld the decision.
