Mumbai Metro to witness fare hike

Fares for Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro are possibly to be higher than initially determined by the state government. The administration had set fares at Rs 9-13 for the 11.4-km elevated corridor, based on the 2004 tariff for BEST buses. However, Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) – which has developed the state of the art transport system, pointed out that bus (BEST) fares increased 140% since 2004 and are still vastly subsidized.

Earlier, on February 7, 2014, the Union urban development ministry wrote to the state government, “MMOPL can fix the fare afresh after getting the proposal of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC). However, no FFC recommendation is essential to fix the initial fare.”

MMOPL’s CEO Abhay Kumar Mishra observed, “Fare fixation shall be governed by relevant provisions of the Metro Railways (operations and maintenance) Act, 2002”.

“We also have to understand that BEST and suburban train fares are heavily subsidized,” he said, further continuing, “We are ready to roll out the service within seven days of receipt of the safety certification from the commissioner of metro railway safety. The inspection of the VAG system was completed on April 28.”
