Of late the Mumbaikars will now witness their first metro chugging between Versova and Ghatkopar possibly in the second week of April. It received the safety certification from the Research Design and Standard Organisation (RDSO) on Wednesday, belatedly, almost 50 days after the safety tests were carried out.

The safety certification report will be submitted to the commissioner of metro railway safety (CMRS), who will give permission for commercial operations after studying it.

Developed on a public-private-partnership (PPP) model by the Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), the 1 1 . 4 – k m Ve r s o v a – Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) metro corridor is the joint effort of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Reliance Infra and Veolia.

Addressing mediapersons the MMRDA commissioner UPS Madan said, “We will submit the report to the CRS, which is the last stage of safety certification. Once the CRS gives the approval, we will start the services for Mumbaiites.”

MMOPL will approach the CRS shortly, the spokesperson informed. Following the final approval from the CRS, MMOPL will need the approval of the railway board. The CRS is expected to take a week or two to carry out the inspection.

The trial carried out by a ten-member RDSO team on January 31 to study the dynamic behaviour of metro trains in different conditions pertaining to safety, stability and quality rides along braking system were completed on February 10.
