Twenty seven young and talented artists were conferred  the “Sri Shanmukhananda Bharat Ratna M.S.Subbulakshmi Fellowship award in Music 2014”  at a function held at the Sri Shanmukhananda Chandrasekharendra Saraswati auditorium last night. 
 
Each fellowship carries an award  of Rs. 1 lakh per annum for three years and a citation..
 
The artists were in  the age group of 11 to 28 years  in the fields of Vocal, Veena, Flute, Violin, Nadaswaram, Percussion and Morsing, and they hail from Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra  Karnataka and Kerala.18 awardees were from Chennai.
 
The youngest among them was the 11 year old Viraj Joshi, the grand son of Bharat Ratna Pt.Bhimsen Joshi who started giving vocal performance along with his father Shriniwas Joshi at the tender age of 6. The 17 year old S.Akash from Karnataka started learning music from the age of  four years. Twenty year old  N.R.Anand and his brother N.R. Kannan (28) getting the fellowships in the field of Nadaswaram. Among others musicians,  most of them had done post graduation in Music and other fields , include Vasudha Ravi, V.R.Raghava Krishna, Vinay Sharva, Sruti Sagar (flute),K.J.Dileep, K.P.Nandini , Sai Subramanyan(Morsing),R.Raghul (Violin) and Dharini Veeraraghavan a Sabha artist.
 
On the occasion Mrs. Suguna Varadachari , an eminent carnatic vocalist and a music teacher from Chennai was presented the Smt M.S.Subbulakshmi Sangeetha Pracharya award which carries a cash prize of Rs. One lakh, a 5 ft high lamp and citation.
 
Earlier , Kumari Aishwarya the great grand daughter of “MS” gave a vocal recital -a Sangeethanjali on the 99th birth anniversary of the  legend  singer.
